After over a year of uncertainty, restrictions, staying at home and making the best of it, my series Guiding Lights is all about trusting the process and not knowing what comes next.

One of my guiding lights through this process is my intuition.

When I’m painting each step informs the next, nothing is planned ahead.

I go back and forth between using my intuition and applying rule based design principles.

This helps me keep a playful approach to my work and to keep it connected to myself.

I started out wanting to explore contrasts of lights and darks, and to find a balance between subtle and bold differences.

As in previous work, I continue to include transparent layers set against solid areas of colour.

The transparent colours, just like the surfaces which are scratched into and sanded back, allow you to see the history of the piece, a glimpse into the past.

The series line-up as a whole is like a metaphor for the world looking more and more hopeful after such a long period of uncertainty.

The first painting “In the Shadows” is very dark and moody.

Over the course of the series the paintings become brighter, until the final painting “Into the Light” - an idealistic look into the future.
